Linking your feed address to a RSS button – part 1

Posted on February 19th, 2008 by Collin in Lessons

Linking your feed address to a RSS button is a lot simpler then you might think. I first want to tell you that I am not a code or linking super star but just an average guy who needed to find a way to do this that was very easy with out having to find help to do it, and that is what I am going to teach you to do right now.

If you missed the post I made a few days ago titled ” Standing out from the crowd with the right RSS buttons” you can visit it by clicking here. This is the next post related to that one where I tell you how to link your RSS feed address to what ever button you want to use to promote your feeds and gain those well deserved subscribers.

The lesson – part 1

First thing your going to want to do is pick a RSS button you want to use on your site, you can grab one for free by visiting our Free Buttons Page Here. Once you have chosen an image save it to your computer by right clicking on it and then name it what ever you want. The next step your going to want to do is log into your Feedburner account and find your feed address by clicking on the edit feed details tab at the top of the screen, it is this address that will later be linked to your new RSS feed button.

View picture below to see where your actual address is!

I have underlined where your actual address is that people subscribe too. That is the link you will copy and paste into the image.

The next step your going to take now is to log into your wordpress dashboard and pretend like your going to write a new post and bring up that screen. In the lower half of the page is where you have the option to upload a picture to display in your post. What your going to do here is upload your newly saved RSS button and sent it to your editor.

This is what you should be looking at during this stage or the process.

The first picture shows you your upload center options. Browse your computer to find your icon, upload it and the click on send to editor. *Note*, do not use the resizing option in wordpress if the image is to large or small. Use your photo editor for that so the Button does not distort. If you do not have a photo editor that can re-size your RSS button, pick one that fits your location better.

Once you have sent your RSS button image to your editor, which is where you write your posts, click on it to highlight the image and then click on the link button. (the chain looking thing) This is where you link your new RSS button with your feed address.

Here is a picture of what you should be looking at during this phase of the process.

Once again I have underlined where your feed address goes. Just place the link in the right box and then click insert. Now your new RSS button is linked to your address.

Now I bet at this part in the lesson your saying to your self, how do I get that RSS button with my link built in it to my sidebar? This next picture will show you how to retrieve the HTML code for this button that is linked to your RSS feed.

After you have linked your new RSS button with your feed address just click on the button that says code and there you’ll find it. Copy and paste that code into your widget or theme template where you want your new button to be displayed and your all set.

Now that was pretty darn easy right? Finding the link to your email subscription option is a bit harder and I will get into that with tomorrows post but the way you link it to your RSS email button, if you want to display one, will still be the same way as what I just showed you. Just finding the feed link for the email option is a bit harder.

Well I hope you found this post helpful, and if so please consider subscribing to our full feed rss either in a reader or by email.

[...] I am sure a lot of you have seen my subscription buttons I have displayed on the right hand side of my site above the fold. One of them is linked to the “subscribe in a reader” option and the other is linked right to my email subscription service. Finding your feed address for the first option that I talked about yesterday is really kind of simple as I am sure you found out by reading the post. If you have not read it yet just click here to read it. [...]
