If you screw affiliate marketers – guess what the next step is?

Posted on February 24th, 2009 by Collin in marketing

This topic has come up quite a bit on a few different blogs that I read over the past few months. It’s a pretty simple concept to follow really, if you screw an affiliate marketer enough – THEY WILL BUY THEIR OWN NETWORK!

Let me explain this a bit!

As many of you all know, I have been marketing for a while now and it wasn’t until I got on board with Advaliant that I started to see some good money coming in, which confirmed to me that “I know what I am doing“. That also confirmed to me a few other things too, that a lot of my leads were getting scrubbed. But why?

Well, my best guess is that certain networks PAD there super affiliates to keep them as part of there network, and then scrub leads with the smaller affiliates to make up the difference. When a lead gets scrubbed that means you don’t get paid for it – even though it was a lead you got. You, as an affiliate have no control over what gets scrubbed. Or do you?

I had a very interesting conversation with Direct Track themselves this morning and you would honestly be shocked and what goes on and how little control an affiliate marketer has. It honestly made me feel sick!! Certain marketers state that networks that use Direct Track suck because the tracking is off – well guess what – its not the tracking at all!

For a start up fee of $12,000.00 and a monthly hosting fee of $1000.00 (seems like a lot don’t it – sit back an actually do the math) you can own your own affiliate network through Direct Track and fully control everything and increase your profits by at least 15% if not more. That all depends on how much scrubbing was getting done to you.

Here is a prime example of me getting screwed by a network  “and why”  I am taking a strong look at starting my own network. There comes a point for every affiliate marketer when enough becomes enough.

The story!

I joined a new network that I never worked with before and build a site around one of the offers that they had. In the first week I drove – 150 clicks to the offer the site was built around, this is after my traffic read my review of the offer- so they were interested in what the offer was. I got no leads! I then switched out the link to another network  who also had the same offer, with the same landing page. I got 22 clicks in the first few days using the new networks link and got 2 leads = $72.00. I was like—-Hmmmmmm!!!!!

I assumed that my leads were getting scrubbed, I really had no other conclusion to come up with then that. What is even worse is – this kind of shit happens all the time. And what it is doing is forcing serious affiliate marketers to take control of there own businesses and start there own networks and rightfully so!

In Closing

I am sorry I had to make this post, I really am, but for months I sat here thinking I was doing something fucking wrong, when I wasn’t. And for all you dishonest networks that are out there – your days are numbered!!!!

I also want to thank all the networks that have worked with me, you guys rock!

They are:

Pepperjam Network

Advaliant

Lead Expose

NeverBlue

I am not saying all are bad either here guys – I am just basically pointing out to you (and venting) that you need to keep an eye on your traffic and your clicks. If something feels off – change links and try an other network.

    Collin, you owe no apologies for saying what needs said. It’s far too common and no one is calling these sites out and holding them responsible. I appreciate your honesty and admire the fact you have the stones to say it. I’m working on another email marketing post where I recommend AWeber using my affiliate link. Several years, dozens of posts and ads yet not a single dime in commission from AWeber. I’ve had several people actually say they signed up using my link yet it never shows up on my account. This will be the last attempt using their affiliate program. It sucks too because I truly believe they’re the best game in town when it comes to email management and autoresponders. I’m hoping I’m wrong which is very possible.

    @Brian D. Hawkins:
    Good luck Brian!

    I guess the whole point of this post was more me venting then anything else. There are a lot of great networks out there – and I only listed 4 because that is who I deal with the most and that’s the only reason why I listed them 4.

    I am convinced that I have had leads scrubbed in the past… especially with Commission Junction.. I also switched an offer over to Neverblue and I actually get the odd commission here and there whereas this offer had never converted for me on the previous network.

    Don’t get me started Forest on CJ – that was my very first taste of scrubbing, but the let the leads show up in my account and leave them there for a week and then they pulled them.

    I don’t use CJ for anything, and you should take a look at Advaliant and Lead Expose too.

    Your brutal honesty is inspirational, Collin! The sad thing is that people trying to gain entry, who can not afford the $12,000 startup fee and $1000 per month, will still end up being screwed. Always the small guy, eh! Having said that, your recommendation of honest networks will be very valuable when my decision making time re which affiliate network to use, comes about.

    @Collin:

    Hello Collin De Ruyck,
    I just wanted to comment on your post regarding Directtrack. We are a new CPA Network that is launching this month and we work off of the Linktrust platform. I invite you to come and check us out. We selected the Linktrust platform due to the superior tracking capabilities. You can visit the Linktrust website for more information about their software. If you decide to signup with our network please mention that you were referred by me and I will put in a request to our ops team to be your affilaite manager. I can review our entire system with you to ensure your statistics are accurate. I look forward to hearing from you.
