Are you a spammer?
In today’s video I ask a very simple question, well kind of, that a lot of us might not know the answer to. I ask you if you are a spammer, or are people looking at you like you are one.
It is very easy, especially when your knew to blogging to go at it very aggressively. You want to bring in lots of readers and traffic to your site to check things out and grab those subscribers. So what you end up doing is pounding the social networking sites as hard as you can, sending out broadcast after broadcast to your friends list hoping to get them to swing by. But are they just looking at you as a spammer with out you even realizing it.
Is there a happy medium?
I am not sure if there is a happy medium, in some cases I have even seen it where I have stopped by a blog for the first time and found that I liked there content so I started to read some of there most recent posts, and I was compelled to comment but the blog owner just thought for some reason I guess I was spamming his site. Which to me is right stupid as I am sure most of you do this too, if there is a new comment or two on my blog I look and see who they are before I approve there comment. I don’t just say “Oh that guy is spam” and toss there comment in the garbage. I think some people need to look up the definition of spam and learn a few things about community involvement.
If has been about two months now that I have backed right off of any type of broadcasting or self promotion simply because there are so many people who don’t understand really what spam is, and I don’t want to get looked at that way.

I don’t look at others as being spammers as long as they are providing value. Some times it does get to be too much and I usually unsubscribe or drop them as a friend. Not because they were spammy but mostly because the info wasn’t what I wanted at that particular time.
I don’t think I have ever been spammy, I’m too timid for that. If anything I am probably to quiet. Well unless you put a guitar in my hands a I’ve had a couple of beers.
ReplyYa true enough there.
ReplyTimely post. There is one “friend” on blogcatalog who has been broadcasting every other day it seems…a little annoying.
I feel for you on being called a spammer for commenting a lot. I’ve been doing that more and more myself, after joining EC.
Luckily all comments so far have been accepted graciously. I think that person definitely jumped the gun a bit on that one…I’m sure your comments were well more then the 2-5 word spammy type.

ReplyI wouldn’t “back off” too much. As long as your comments are the way they should be, the larger percentage of blog owners will take them as they should.
