Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently update content of websites and taking those formats and placing them in one central location for you to view. One amazing thing you must know about RSS is, as an Internet surfer is has the ability to save you time, energy and agravati0n. Why spend hours upon hours surfing the Internet looking for the same information over and over again because you don’t have an efficient way of tracking your favorite sites. Bookmarking is not considered the efficient way to track a sites content, well at least not by today’s standards.
How can I tell you when there is something new if I don’t bookmark the site?
When you subscribe to a websites RSS feed that is how you can be informed when there is new content. The best way to look at what RSS is or what you can reference the principle of it to, are radio waves. When you want to hear something new from your radio or a station you like you can just tune them in and radio waves bring that content to you. Well RSS is, in certain aspects the same if not better then radio waves because it can tell you when there is something new for you to read on a particular site. You don’t even need to visit the site if you don’t want to, by simply subscribing the websites RSS feed they can send you an email when they have updated their content and it can be sitting right in your inbox. You can also subscribe to a sites RSS feed in the form of a reader. Most people are using the Google reader to host all of the feeds they have subscribe too. All you have to do to let the site know you want regular updates from it is to subscribe to the RSS feed. Subscribing to a sites feed is like your preset radio stations in your car. You have your favorite stations programed in and when you want to check to see if there is something on you like all you do is click a button. When you subscribe to a websites feed by clicking on the subscribe button, that’s all your doing, you’re just programming your radio. Nice eh!
What to look for so you can subscribe!
There is a symbol that is used to display a websites subscription services or the fact that it has a feed you can subscribe too. This is a standard symbol that comes in every shape and size and color but is easy to pick out if you know what to look for. Here is what the symbol looks like.
These two half rounded lines with a dot is the international symbol for “really simple syndication” or the websites way of telling you they have a feed you can subscribe to and get your regular updates. There really is a lot of different looks for these buttons and you can view some of them on our Free Buttons page here at Feed Flare this way you can pick them out very easily when your surfing.
I hope this post helps you understand what really simple syndication (RSS) is and why it is a great tool for you use as a Internet surfer, and when you come across a simple like what is shown above you will know just what to do.
