Is Stumble Traffic Really What It’s Cracked Up To Be?
Ever since I started blogging a year and a bit ago everyone has always said “You have to join Stumble Upon to get lots of traffic to your blogs” so like so many other newbie’s I listened to what I was reading. I never really did that much with Stumble and never really saw much traffic from it so I decided to do a little test about 2 months ago.
How I tested Stumble Upon Traffic
As many of you know I was busting my chops building affiliate based websites a few months back. It was then I decided to see if traffic from Stumble Upon was worth the time and energy needed to get it. I blasted Stumble over the coarse of all most two months submitting as much as I could to the site (my new affiliate sites) as well as stumbling other websites. I grew my friends list to I think it was around 200 or so and kept at it daily.
When ever I created a new site or wrote a new article, it was there. Funny thing is I did get some traffic and usually from the first time I submitted the site to Stumble but very little after that.
I was Stumbling so much I got Banned!
Yep, that’s right! I was stumbling so much stuff I ended up getting banned from there. I guess I should of not stumbled my own sites eh! But with getting banned from Stumble you would think it would be a bad thing right? Well, it wasn’t and here’s why.
The real Stumble effect
Stumble traffic is known for being one of the top traffic sources for bouncing right off your site the second it hits it. How are you supposed to build a site using Stumble traffic as one of the sites traffic sources if they bounce right off your site? You can’t build a site that way and that type of traffic is worthless just because of the bounce rate it has. Your visitors need to read your content or what ever your site is about before they leave, if they just bounce off right away, what good is that.
What has traffic been like since I got banned.
Well, to be 100% honest with you guys, its been about a month and a half since the ban was placed on my Stumble account and my traffic is actually up. In the case of getting conversations for this blog (meaning increasing readership) I am converting more now then ever before. Why?
I would have to say there would be a few reasons why my blog is doing better then it ever has before. The biggest would be content. I personally feel my content is better now then ever. Even though I jump from topic to topic regularly, it’s still better. I feel that writing content for people instead of writing for search engines is not necessarily the best thing you can do either. I think you have to do both if you want your blogs to grow at a regular pace.
There is no reason why you can’t do a little keyword research first and draw traffic to your post or blog from search engines. It’s a must I think if you want to have stable amount of traffic that converts into readers or into sales, depending on what your blog is about. You can still write your posts so that your readers like it and don’t feel like there a no body to you, just think of your post titles a bit more and research popular terms to help you increase blog traffic.
I know it is hard to research keywords and keyword phrases for every post you may have on your blog, heck I don’t do it every time myself. I do it at least once per week and it has done more for me and this blogs traffic then Stumble has ever done.
My closing thoughts on Stumble Upon!
When I got banned I had the option to review the terms and conditions and re-apply to get the ban lifted from my account. I have not done that as of yet because I don’t think that Stumble traffic is worth anything and its not something I want to focus my time on. It really has not done much for me in any way shape or form, Twitter on the other hand has been amazing. People there actually interact with you, its kind of nice.
Stumble Upon traffic is really no different then buying traffic for your blog, the only real difference between buying traffic and Stumble Upon is, with, buying traffic you don’t have to waste so much time trying to get it.

I do agree that SU does have a higher bounce rate but I don’t agree that the traffic is worthless. I also think SU is a great way to find other interesting articles and websites. Let me direct you to a interesting article I read recently about how to advertise on StumbleUpon SEO Hosting’s blog the-beginners-guide-to-advertising-on-stumbleupon I found this article rather informative. I do also agree about optimizing for certain keywords to get natural traffic. As far as Twitter goes, I love it. Twitter is so cool and quite addictive to I might add.
ReplyI agree with Collin about the SU traffic. A huge bump one day but only a dribble after that. I’m not sold on twitter yet.
ReplyMorning Collin. Good post!! Ive tested SU traffic on various sites and blogs and havent found that it converts well and that its mostly tire kicker traffic. In and out like rabbits mating

ReplyI would not say Twitter is good for affiliate sits unless you make your account all based around your products. It does work great for personal blogs though.
so is stumble upon better then digg?
Replyi agree with SU, one day its a spike and then from there on, just little hits here and there, and readers hardly ever stop to read the content on the blog/site, hardly any returns, but im just a newbie so I’m still yet to experience anything else haha
ReplySo Stumble isn’t all that after all…what social network is actually bringing in traffic
Reply@Market Secrets Blogger:
ReplyHonestly, I think the best way to get traffic is to target keyword phrases and get search engine traffic. I have spent a lot of time trying to get that “mother load” of traffic from social sites and it has never happened for me. Some people have had good luck with it so it might be something you want to test. But search traffic is better converting and way more targeted.
I hear you…I’ve been getting most of my traffic from my blog posts and comments coming up in the search engines. I learned this from studying my WordPress stats
ReplyNothing gives spikes in traffic like a StumbleUpon listing / review. The potential profitability of said traffic is very much dependent on your specific niche or service. Some types of businesses will benefit more from SU traffic tahn others, and then don’t forget your geographic location. If your business service is land-based it will benefit less from receiving US traffic in Africa than an internet based business that can ship its product or service worldwide.

ReplyHey Jacques, great point man! I never thought of of it that way. Maybe I should try what others do and that’s try and promote affiliate products through stumble. If only I had time too…lol
Hi,
Truly awesome point there… I completely agree with you…
